La Farmacia – The Pharmacy

In Spain the pharmacist is qualified to sell over the counter many medicines that only a doctor can prescribe in the UK. This is great for many minor ailments as you don’t need an appointment & there is always a duty pharmacy (Farmacia de guardia), open nearby.

For this month’s Spanish language feature, our Spanish teacher Michelle has compiled a list of useful vocabulary for asking for medicine and explaining symptoms at the pharmacy.  

Necesito algo para ………. – I need something for…….

 ……..un resfriado – a cold,      un tos – a cough,      la fiebre del heno – hay fever,     la resaca – hangover,      picaduras – insect bites,      quemaduras del sol – sunburn,      molestias de estómago- stomach upset,     fiebre – fever,      migraña – migraine,      dolores premenstruales – premenstrual pain,      estreñimiento – constipation,      diarrea – diarrhoea.

¿Cómo lo tomo? – How do I take it?

Toma dos comprimidos cada seis horas. – Take 2 tablets every 6 hours.

¿Puede dármelo sin rectea? – Can I get it without a prescription?

No se lo puedo dar sin receta. –  I can’t give it you without a prescription.

Tengo esta receta- I have this prescription.

Tendré que pedirlo – I’ll have to order it.

No lo tengo ahora, mañana por la tarde lo tendré – I don’t have it now, tomorrow afternoon I’ll have it.

una crema antiséptica – antisceptic cream,      una venda – bandage,    algodón – cotton wool,   

 un jarabe para tos – cough syrup,      tiritas – sticky plasters,      desinfectante – disinfectant,     

gotas para los oídos / ojos – ear / eye drops,      gasa – gauze,    un repelente / spray para insectos – insect repellent / spray,     

yodo – iodine,   un laxante – laxative,      unas pastillas para la garganta – throat lozenges
