Survey reveals Brits retiring abroad are happy with their choice

According to a NatWest poll published in the Daily Mail, the majority of expats emigrating to retire are happy with their choice and do not intend to return home.

Seven out of ten Britons who have retired abroad are happy with their choice of country and intend to stay there, and fewer than one in five who have gone to live in France, Portugal or Spain are considering returning home.

This is a really positive news story for people dreaming of retiring to sunnier climates and supports our belief that retiring abroad can be a fantastic choice. For those of you thinking of retiring abroad, the survey suggested the best way to be happy in your retirement overseas is to work there first before you retire. This enables you to settle into a group of friends and prepare for retirement in that country, rather than risk isolation at home.

The survey revealed that there are approximately 115,000 British expat pensioners in Spain, making it one of the most popular choices. Expats choose it for its climate, relaxed way of life and proximity to the UK. Spain is also a place with old-fashioned values where older people are respected and have an active role in the society, which is a real bonus for those retiring from Britain. There are loads of groups to join, classes to take and things to do and large expat communities to make you feel at home.
